How to add a Google Calendar

This option has only been tested with Google Calendar, but the ical format used is an open standard and it should work with any Internet Calendar, provided it is accessible over the Internet.

  1. Visit Google Calendar on a desktop computer and login as normal.

These instructions only work on a desktop computer, as Google hides these options on mobile.

  2. Find your list of calendars, usually at the bottom left of your calendar.

  3. Hover over name of the calendar that you want to link and you should see a three dot menu button appear to the right, please click on it, then follow the option for 'Settings and Sharing'.

  4. If you already share your calendar publicly then you can simply use your public link. A more secure option is to scroll down to 'Secret address in iCal format', which enables only those who have this secret link to view your calendar.

  5. Click on the copy icon to the right of the secret link, to copy the link to your clipboard.

  6. Visit Add Internet Calendar. Give the source a name e.g. 'gcal'. Paste the secret link (Ctrl+v), before finally clicking 'Create Internet Calendar'.

How to import events

The ability to import events is useful if you wish to recreate your account, or if you simply prefer to manage your events list in your favourite spreadsheet application.

  1. Download sample file:

If you don't already have an events file ready to import, then download the sample file, which should look similar to:

      "year","month","day","end_year","end_month","end_day","start_time","name","origin_year"
      0,5,1,,,,"18:30","Wedding Anniversary",2010
      1985,7,22,,,,,"Birthday",1985

  2. Edit the downloaded events file to add your own events:

    1. You will need software to edit the CSV (Comma Separated Values) file. Whilst you can edit it in a text editor like Notepad, it will be much easier if you have a spreadsheet application, such as Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or the free LibreOffice office suite.
    2. For events that happen every year on the same day, use "0" as the year.
    3. For birthdays and wedding anniversaries, add an origin year, to include the elapsed years on your calendars.
    4. Don't forget to delete the sample rows.
  3. Upload your edited events file:

    1. Visit Events page and click on the 'Import Events (advanced)' button to reveal its contents.
    2. Click 'Choose file' and browse to the Events CSV file that you wish to import.
    3. Click 'Upload' button to complete your import.

You should now see events with the source 'Import' in your events. You can change 'All sources' to 'CSV Import' to filter your events list.
